Be Strong Samson
A long time ago, God made a promise to Abraham. He would make a great nation out of Abraham’s family. He also promised to bless anyone who blessed Abraham’s people, the nation of Israel, and he would curse anyone who cursed them. By the time of the book of Judges the people were starting to fall away from God. The Bible says the time of the Judges was a time when Israel had no king and twice tells us why. “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” In other words, the people did whatever they wanted, without thinking about obeying God. Because they did this, God allowed the nation of Israel. to be taken over by other nations. When this happened the people would cry out to God, and God would raise up a leader over His people to rescue them, keeping the promise to Abraham to curse those who cursed Israel. These leaders were called judges, and one of those judges was Samson.
Samson is kind of the superhero of the Bible. He had super strength. There are times in his story where he does things that clearly disobey God, and even times where God appears to let him get away with it. It’s in these times that we need to remember, Samson is a judge, who is being used to bring God’s punishment on a nation (the Philistines) who dared to curse God’s people. Samson seemed to have forgotten that the “super strength” he had came from the Lord. Instead he seems to have left his victories go to his head, and relied on his own strength rather than trusting the God who made him strong.
